Sustainable Fashion from Kathmandu: Why Natural Fibers Matter
Every garment in this collection is handmade in Kathmandu, Nepal, from fibers that grow naturally in the Himalayan region. Unlike fast fashion brands that rely on synthetic materials, overseas factories, and disposable design, Kyamuno produces small-batch clothing and accessories using wild hemp, organic cotton, hand-spun pashmina, Himalayan nettle, bamboo linen, and raw silk.
Nepal's textile heritage stretches back over 600 years. Communities across the Kathmandu Valley and the hill regions have grown, spun, and woven natural fibers by hand for generations, long before the word 'sustainability' became a marketing term. Kyamuno works within this living tradition, partnering with women-led workshops in Lalitpur and Patan where traditional pit-loom weaving, natural dyeing, and hand-finishing techniques are still practiced daily.
Our supply chain is among the shortest in the fashion industry. Raw fibers are harvested from hill farms within 200 km of Kathmandu, processed without synthetic chemicals in mountain streams and village workshops, hand-spun on wooden charkhas, woven on heritage looms, cut and sewn in our Kathmandu studio, and shipped directly to you. No overseas factories, no anonymous supply chains, no plastic packaging.
Hemp: The Strongest Natural Fiber
Wild Himalayan hemp grows across Nepal's western hills without pesticides, irrigation, or synthetic inputs. It absorbs 4x more CO₂ per hectare than trees, requires 50% less water than cotton, and produces fibers that actually strengthen with every wash. Our 380 GSM heavyweight hemp canvas is among the most durable natural fabrics available, designed to last decades rather than seasons.
Zero-Waste Production
Every garment is made to order or in small batches of 20–50 pieces, eliminating overproduction waste. Our pattern layouts are optimized for minimal fabric waste, and any offcuts are repurposed into smaller accessories or returned to the compost cycle. No synthetic chemicals enter our production process, and every product is 100% biodegradable at end of life.
Ethical, Transparent, Traceable
Every artisan in our supply chain is paid 30% above Nepal's minimum garment wage, with bi-annual reviews and profit-sharing bonuses. We publish our wages, conduct independent wellbeing audits, and welcome factory visits from any customer. When you buy from Kyamuno, you know exactly who made your garment, where the fiber came from, and how it traveled to you.
From Fiber to Earth: The Natural Cycle
When a Kyamuno garment reaches the end of its life, after years of wear and washing and mending, you don't throw it in a landfill. You bury it. Natural hemp, cotton, pashmina, and nettle fibers decompose within weeks to months in soil, returning nutrients to the earth without releasing microplastics or synthetic chemicals. Compare that to polyester, which takes 500+ years to break down and sheds microplastics with every wash. Choosing natural fibers isn't just a fashion statement, it's a decision that directly impacts the health of Nepal's rivers, soil, and communities.
